Aims of TMGSS History Curriculum:

 

To enable students to

1.     “Pursue Knowledge”:
 

(a)    enhance and develop students’ interest in studying history;

(b)   help students understand the present in the context of the past;

(c)    discover where they stand in the contemporary World through understanding the origins and development of modern events;

(d)   enrich students’ knowledge of the history and culture of Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, China, as well as other major history and cultures of the World;

(e)    develop students’ historical skills and generic skills for further studies and life situations;

(f)    develop the skills of critical thinking, making sound judgments and effective communication through exploring historical issues; and

(g)   be prepared to explore in greater depth an issue of personal interest, or one that may be of relevance to their future careers and professional studies.

 

2.     “Cultivate Virtue”:
 

(a)    to nurture students to become citizens who have global perspectives and sense of responsibility;

(b)   approach past and current events in an impartial and empathetic manner, using a variety of perspectives;

(c)    understand the characteristics and values the history and culture of Tuen Mun and Hong Kong, and appreciate the shared humanity and common problems of the World’s many peoples; and

(d)   cultivate the citizenship as Tuen Mun and Hong Kong residents, the national patriotism as Chinese, and the consciousness of being citizens of the global community, and thus become rational and sensible members of Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, China, and the World at large.
 

3.     Foster National Security:
 

(a)    understand the importance of national security from historical and cultural perspectives by studying the nation's development across different stages of world history and topics related to Hong Kong's development;

(b)   understand the historical fact that "Hong Kong has been part of China since ancient times" and explore the close relationship between Hong Kong’s development and the nation’s history and culture and foster students’ sense of national identity and belonging to the Chinese nation;

(c)    explore the nation’s journey of overcoming adversity, striving for self-reliance and strength, and ultimately regaining sovereignty over Hong Kong, cultivate students’ national consciousness and sense of responsibility toward the nation and its people, and become responsible citizens with a global perspective as Chinese nationals;

(d)   gain insight into key aspects of national security, particularly political and cultural security, from historical and cultural perspectives and recognize the importance of safeguarding national security and develop a conscious commitment to its protection;

(e)    understand the close ties between Hong Kong’s development and the nation’s history and culture. This supports the cultivation of national consciousness and a sense of mission and responsibility toward the nation and its people; and

(f)    gain a deeper understanding of the nation’s arduous journey over the past century and become responsible citizens with a global outlook as Chinese nationals.
